I have a schefflera umbrella tree(brassaia actinophylia)?

what would cause it's leaves to start falling off? how would you take care of it to keep it healthy?

I have a schefflera umbrella tree(brassaia actinophylia)?
The other name for this plant is Australian umbrella tree; it needs little attention, requires strong light but not direct sun, water only when the soil surface is dry. The possible causes for the leaves to fall could be that it is over-watered, or it is not getting enough light, or it is getting too much direct sunlight. Try putting it in a different spot, make sure it is not root-bound yet, and make sure it is thoroughly watered, allowing the water to drain completely. Standing water will cause the roots to rot.

Remember to fertilize at least 2X a year.
Reply:thank you for asking this question. I have one and have been wrecking my brains trying to figure out what was wrong. You have some very good responses here sure dose help me out. Again thanks
Reply:That is a tropical plant. It definitely needs to be misted, and placed in a sunnier spot.
Reply:rub the underside of the leaves with your fingertip. Do you feel a rough, gritty surface? Are the leaves yellowing? When I worked in the nusery, these plants were constantly infested with spider mites. My guess is that if the watering and light are unchanged and then the plant starts to decline, you probably have an infestation. You would treat the mites with a miticide.
Reply:There are a number of possible reasons for why it is dropping leaves, but the most important factor is light. the more light it gets the better. situate it in the sunniest window you've got. over-watering or under-watering will cause foliage to drop as well. if it's already in a sunny location, the soil may be too dry. always check the soil's moisture level before watering. they do prefer to be on the dry side, but bone dry will cause stress.

if it's in lower light it may be too wet. they don't like wet feet and could be rotting out. also, plants in low light cannot sustain as much foliage as plants in high light, so they'll just thin themselves out.

also check for pest like spider mites or scale.

and remember that all plants shed foliage as they grow, so a little leaf drop is acceptable.
Reply:Hello

Schefflera's will lose one or two leaves here and there nothing to worry about. If there are alot of leaves falling off yellowing out and dropping it may have gotten root bound inhibiting water consumtion. Bright light is always best for that particular plant at least 4-6 hours of direct sun or constant indirecting light. May also need to be fed. Goodluck
